Art Waldenville - Head Coach

2009 - Woody Flowers Award Nominee

Whether he is teaching us how to wire a digital circuit, or guiding our team during build season, Mr. Waldenville is the helping hand that guides us to finding the answers. Not only is he a great teacher, he is a great mentor and role model for us. Mr. Waldenville always takes the time to make sure that we, as students, understand what he is teaching before he moves on. Science and engineering classes aren’t always easy. But he also notices when we are having a bad day, and he sets aside the time to talk to us and make sure we’re doing okay. Mr. Waldenville is an amazing teacher, person, and friend. He understands that we are all are individuals, not just students, and that we are all capable of great things if we set our minds to them and work hard.

Mr. Waldenville exemplifies the gracious professionalism you see in our team by mentoring numerous other teams from across the state of Oklahoma. We believe in helping other teams no matter what, and that comes from his personal example. I know that there have other FIRST teams at our regional, which would not have made it past inspection without Mr. Waldenville’s help and guidance. FIRST isn't a competition to him, its part of a truly amazing experience worth sharing with all students, not just his own.

Mr. Waldenville is very a dedicated education and “Teacher” is a title he is very proud of. Earlier in his life, he was a well-paid geologist and decided that he was tired of "turning over the same rock." He wanted to make a difference in young peoples lives so he went back to school and earned a masters degree in education. While he is certified to teach just about every science and engineering course at the high school level, his greatest impact on students is that he takes the time to connect with them as individuals. Mr. Waldenville leaves no one behind.

Each build season, Mr. Waldenville encourages everyone to work as a group and to value ALL input from the team. He is a master at helping us get from “what we want to do” to “how we do it.” He has taught us to pay attention to the details, not only in designing and building a robot, but on the important aspects of our lives as well. Mr. Waldenville has helped us developed the time management skills we will need as future engineers. He has told us on many occasions that, "Hard work now will always pay off in the long run," and it always has for Team 1742.

Mr. Waldenville is always prepared for a challenge; he spends countless hours researching new ways to improve our robot every year, and helping us find what we need when we get stuck. Our lab, where we build the robot, is his home away from home. He gives up so much for his students every year, and we couldn’t be more grateful. Mr. Waldenville has changed each and every one of us into a more capable and intelligent individual through our experiences with FIRST. He is truly the best mentor for FIRST Robotics that we could ever ask for. We know HIS hard work now, will pay off for all of us in the long run.
