Team Shockwave with FIRST founder Dean Kamen For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology FIRST ROBOTICS Vision "To transform our culture by creating a world where science and technology are celebrated and where young people dream of becoming science and technology heroes." Dean Kamen, Founder Mission Our mission is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication and leadership. Gracious Professionalism Dr. Woodie Flowers, FIRST National Advisor and Pappalardo Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, coined the term "Gracious Professionalism." Gracious Professionalism is part of the ethos of FIRST. It's a way of doing things that encourages high-quality work, emphasizes the value of others, and respects individuals and the community.
TEAM SHOCKWAVE Students and instructors from Team 1742 have dedicated themselves to modeling Gracious Professionalism, and communicating the value of the FIRST Robotics experience across the state of Oklahoma. As a result of that commitment, Team 1742 was, and is, an important factor in the explosive growth of FIRST Robotics in Oklahoma. We have made presentations to state legislators, the Noble Foundation, the Oklahoma State School Board Association, the Oklahoma Career Tech Convention in Tulsa, the Oklahoma Pre-Engineering Conference, Career Tech Directors, schools outside our districts to help start a team, local school boards, the chamber of commerce, and the Rotary and Lion’s Clubs. We have made trips around the state to help other teams, and were fortunate to win the 2008 Johnson and Johnson Gracious Professionalism Award at the OKC Regional. We have been helped by many teams in the past, notably Team 476 and 1561 and we pay it forward. Team 1742 makes it a point to reach out to those less fortunate than ourselves. Every year the team anonymously adopts at least 2 families in the community and makes their holidays brighter by providing Christmas presents and dinner. This year, our team achieved its goal of having all it’s members complete 10 hours of safety training. All members of Team Shockwave are certified by OHSA for the next two years. “Start safe. Stay safe” can now be added to our motto. MNTC's Pre-Engineering Team Earns Spot in World Championship Moore Norman Technology Center's Pre-Engineering Team 1742, the SHOCKWAVE, earned first place at the FIRST Robotics Regional Robotics Competition held last week at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City and will now travel to Atlanta, Ga. to compete for the World Championship April 15-18. The 26 member student team and instructors Art Waldenville and Jason Rausch, competed against 49 other teams from Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas in the three day event. Team 1742 also won two prestigious design awards: The Rockwell Automation Innovation in Control Award and the General Motors Industrial Design Award. The Rockwell Automation Innovation in Control Award celebrates an innovative control system which provides unique machine functions. Team 1742*s camera target tracking system enabled its robot to be the only robot in the competition to purposely score during the autonomous portion of the matches. The General Motors Industrial Design Award celebrates form and function in an efficiently designed machine that effectively achieves the game challenge. String Theory*s clean lines and elegant look, coupled with robust operation and compact design earned Team 1742 its second design award of the competition. SHOCKWAVE finished the qualifying regional matches ranked as having
the number-one robot, and selected Francis Tuttle Technology Center's
Team 1561, the RoboDucks and Tulsa Technology Center's Team 2004, the
ThunderDucks, to go to the finals. After seven final matches the SHOCKDUCK
Alliance emerged as regional winners. Team 1742 is also set to compete
in the inaugural FIRST Robotics Dallas Regional March 12-14 at the Southern
Methodist University Campus. 2009 Oklahoma City - Championship - Final Match
Gracious Professionals Make Dallas Regional Final Four Team Shockwave won The Johnson and Johnson Gracious Professionals Award for the second time in as many years at the 2009 Dallas Regional. The judges had a hard time finding our team to interview, until they realized they had to go find them in other team’s pits. The team was nearly flawless in the qualifying matches with a record of 6-2. Team 1742 was the winner at the end of all qualifying matches, but lost two matches due to penalties assessed to our alliance partners. Team 1742 worked its way up to captain of Alliance #5 where we selected teams 437 and team 2469 to go into the finals. The finals were violent. Team 437 was disabled or damaged in every final match. Their pit crew never gave up and was able to repair the damaged robot and get back on the field for each match. Sometimes only having 2 to 3 minutes to do so. You guys are awesome. Teams 2469 never had a penalty in 2 regionals and were excellent at handling super cells. Their drive team was great to work with at both regional’s, and we can't wait to get back together next year. Team 2469 rocks. Our success in Dallas had not gone unnoticed. Alliance #1 had a plan
to shut us down and they were effective. Congratulations to the winning
alliance - Team 148, Team 418, and Team 2354. Next stop… Atlanta.
FIRST in MNTC Pre-Engineering Pre-Engineering students at Moore Norman Technology Center design and build a robot each year as part of thier Capstone course "Engineering Design and Development". Team 1742 is led by students participating in the Pre-Engineering Program at Moore Norman Technology Center. The goal of MNTC's Pre-Engineering Program (and FIRST Robotics) is to better prepare our students for a 4 year engineering degree after completing high school.
